How I finally stopped hiding my broad shoulders and found the right swimsuit

I’ve spent way too many years feeling weirdly self conscious about my back and shoulders. I have that wider, more athletic build, and for the longest time, I felt like every single swimsuit I bought just made me look like a linebacker. It is so frustrating when you want to feel cute at the beach but you feel like a giant block instead. I used to think the only fix was wearing huge t-shirts over my suit, but that just made me feel even less confident to be honest. After a lot of trial and error in those terrible dressing room mirrors, I realized it’s not about covering up. It is actually about picking specific lines and straps that break up that wide look across your back. Once you get the proportions right, you can actually look super sleek.

Seriously skip those tiny spaghetti straps
I know those little string bikinis are everywhere and they look great on the rack, but if you have broad shoulders, they are basically your worst enemy. Think about it, those thin little lines just make the rest of your back look massive by comparison. It is all about the scale. I started switching to much wider straps or even halter necks that tie behind the neck. Halters are honestly a lifesaver because they create this V-shape that pulls everyone's eyes inward toward your neck instead of outward toward your shoulders. It’s a total optical illusion that makes your upper body look way more balanced and narrow than it really is.

Why a deep V-neck is actually your best friend
One thing I figured out way too late is that high, square necklines act like a giant highlighter for your shoulders. They just create this solid horizontal line that makes you look even wider. What you really want is a deep V-neck. It doesn't even have to be super revealing or anything if you aren't into that, but that vertical line is the real secret. It draws the eye up and down instead of side to side. Every time I wear a plunging neckline, I feel like my whole torso looks longer and leaner. It really takes the focus away from the width of my back and makes everything feel more proportional.

Darker colors on top actually do the trick
We always hear that black is slimming, but you can actually use that to your advantage with some clever color blocking. I have a few suits where the top part is a solid dark color like navy or black, and then the bottom has a bright, busy pattern. This is such a smart way to play with your shape. The dark color on top kind of recedes and makes your upper body look a bit smaller, while the crazy pattern on the bottom draws all the attention down to your legs and hips. It is such a simple trick but it completely changes your whole silhouette without you having to do anything extra.

Look for some interesting back details
Since the back is where most of us feel the most exposed, I started looking for suits that have cool criss-cross designs or multiple straps. I used to think more straps meant more bulk, but it is actually the opposite. When you have a few thin straps crossing over each other, it breaks up that solid wall of your back. It creates these little windows of skin that distract the eye from the width. Just make sure the straps aren't digging in too tight because that can create bulges that weren't even there. You want them to sit flat and look like they aren't even trying.

Do not be afraid of the asymmetrical look
I recently tried a one shoulder swimsuit for the first time and I am never going back. That asymmetrical line is probably the best kept secret for girls with broad shoulders. Because it cuts across your body at a diagonal, it completely destroys that straight horizontal line that makes us look so wide. It is a bit more of a fashion forward look, but it is incredibly flattering. It makes your shoulders look more elegant and way less like a solid block of muscle. Plus, it just feels a bit more high end and expensive than a basic tank style suit.

Comfort is the real secret here anyway
At the end of the day, if you are constantly tugging at your suit or trying to hide behind a towel, people are gonna notice that more than your shoulders. I’ve found that when I wear a suit that actually supports me and stays put, I stand up straighter and move with way more confidence. And honestly, that confidence is what makes you look the most fit and toned. Stop worrying about labels like "broad" or "bulky" and just focus on the lines. Once you find that one suit that makes you feel powerful, you’ll stop caring about the rest.
