How to Choose a Swimsuit for Your First Beach Date: A Style Guide to Feel Confident and Stay Secure

Going on a pool or beach date for the very first time with someone you like is honestly nerve wracking. You want to look super cute and effortlessly beachy, but at the same time you are probably terrified of nip slips, swimsuit wedgies, or having to constantly adjust your straps every five seconds. I remember my first beach date back in college where I wore this tiny string bikini that kept shifting around the whole afternoon. I was so busy pulling my top up and worrying about my tummy that I barely even talked to the guy. After a few date fails I realized that date night swimwear is not about wearing the most revealing tiny swimsuit you can find. It is all about finding something that locks everything in place so you can actually chill out and have fun. Here are my favorite go to swimsuit styles that give you total confidence without feeling like a boring outfit.

High waisted two pieces with ribbed fabric for that easy held in feeling

If you do not want to wear a full coverage one piece but still want to feel super secure around your middle, a high waisted two piece is pretty much unbeatable. I always recommend going for thick ribbed material instead of thin flat spandex. Ribbed fabric has this amazing natural stretch that holds your lower stomach comfortably without squeezing your hips into weird shapes. Pairing a high waisted bottom with a sturdy bralette top gives you that playful bikini look, but you still get plenty of waist coverage so you can sit down and eat tacos without constantly worrying about bloat.

Classic square neck one pieces that keep your chest completely locked in

When you want zero chances of top slipping or wardrobe drama while splashing around, a classy square neck one piece is your best friend. Low cut scoop necks or tiny triangle cups can be super risky when a big wave hits or when you get out of the pool. A square neck cuts straight across your chest, keeping everything completely covered and flat against your body. It has this really clean retro French vibe that looks super elevated in photos, and you can jump in and out of the water all day without ever needing to check your top.

Throwing on a lightweight linen shirt cover up to bridge those awkward walking moments

One of the biggest stress points on a water date is that weird walking distance between the beach towel and the ice cream shop or bathroom. Walking around in just your swimsuit in front of someone new can feel a little too exposed if you are not used to it. I always pack a slightly oversized white linen button down or a breezy sheer shirt. You just leave it unbuttoned over your swimsuit so it flows behind you while you walk. It covers your back and thighs, keeps the sunburn away, and makes you look like you just stepped out of a resort fashion lookbook without looking like you are trying to hide.

Looking for built in molded cups and soft underwire instead of loose removable pads

Nothing ruins a cute date moment faster than those cheap removable foam pads that fold in half or slide all the way to your armpits the second they get wet. When you are shopping for a date suit, check the inside lining for sewn in molded cups or soft flexible underwire. Built in cups give your bust a super natural rounded shape and stay completely flat no matter how wet the suit gets. You get zero awkward lumpiness on your chest and zero risk of anything showing through the fabric when the water gets cold.

Doing the jump and bend test at home before you actually go on the date

My absolute golden rule before wearing any new swimsuit out on a date is giving it a thorough test run in my bedroom mirror. Put the suit on, jump up and down five times, bend over to touch your toes, and sit down on a chair like you are grabbing food. If straps slip off your shoulders or the bottom rides up when you move around at home, it is definitely gonna do the exact same thing at the beach. Finding out how a suit behaves beforehand saves you from dealing with awkward surprises on your date so you can spend your whole time enjoying the company.
