I used to be under the impression that if you wanted to look truly sexy at the beach you basically had to wear a tiny string bikini and just hope for the best. To be honest I always felt a little bit self conscious in those because I was constantly worrying about strings coming untied or things shifting around whenever I actually moved. But then I started seeing these incredible one piece suits with deep cutouts in the back and it completely changed my mind about what sexy actually looks like. There is something so much more sophisticated and mysterious about having a clean and sleek front and then turning around to reveal this huge unexpected open back. It is like the swimwear version of a business in the front and party in the back situation but in a way that actually looks expensive and intentional. I have slowly started building a collection of these because they make me feel so much more confident and I don't have to spend my whole vacation adjusting my top every five minutes.
The classic deep scoop back is a total staple
If you are just starting to experiment with backless styles you really cannot go wrong with a classic deep scoop. These are usually cut all the way down to the small of your back and they give you this really long and lean silhouette that looks amazing in photos. I love how they make your spine look like it goes on forever and it is such a simple way to show skin without feeling like you are wearing nothing at all. I usually go for a solid dark color with this cut because it keeps the focus on the shape of your body rather than a busy print. It is the kind of suit that works just as well for lounging by a fancy hotel pool as it does for a casual day at the beach with friends.
Cross back straps add that extra bit of detail
For those of us who are a little bit worried about a suit falling off our shoulders a cross back design is the perfect solution. You still get that gorgeous open back feeling but the straps crisscross over each other to give you a lot more support. I have found some really cool ones that have multiple thin straps that create this almost cage like effect across your back which looks so intricate and cool. It is a great way to add some visual interest if you are wearing a very plain suit and it honestly feels a lot more secure when you are actually jumping into the waves or playing volleyball. Plus it avoids that annoying feeling of straps sliding down your arms every time you move.
Why side cutouts are the ultimate curve creators
If you want to take the backless look a step further you should definitely look for suits that have cutouts that wrap around from the back to the sides. This is basically a magic trick for your waistline because it creates this sharp inward curve that makes everyone look like they have an hourglass figure. I was a bit nervous to try this at first because I thought it might pinch my skin in weird places but if you find a suit with high quality fabric it just smooths everything out beautifully. It is a much bolder look than a standard one piece and it definitely turns heads when you walk by. It feels very high fashion and a little bit edgy which is exactly the vibe I want when I am on a tropical getaway.
Lace up details for a bit of a boho vibe
I am currently obsessed with those one pieces that have a lace up detail all the way down the back. It reminds me of a corset but in a much more relaxed and beachy way. The best part about these is that you can actually adjust the lacing to fit your body perfectly which is a total lifesaver if you are between sizes like I am. You can pull it tight for more support or leave it a bit looser for a more effortless and sexy look. It adds a bit of texture to the suit and feels very feminine and pretty without being too girly. I usually pair mine with some big gold jewelry and it looks like something straight out of a luxury travel magazine.
High neck fronts with a surprise open back
One of my favorite ways to wear this trend is to pick a suit that has a very modest high neck in the front. From the front it looks very sporty and sophisticated but then you turn around and the back is almost entirely gone. That contrast is just so cool and it feels very modern and unexpected. It is also great for protecting your chest from the sun if you are going to be out on a boat or hiking to a hidden cove all day. You get the best of both worlds because you have the coverage where you need it but you still get to show off your back and feel a bit daring. It is definitely my go to style when I want to look polished but still feel like I am making a bit of a statement.
